Search engine giant Google wants to make Android the standard for wearables, as it recently released a software development kit that would allow developers to create wearable devices.
Focus on wearables
Google is focusing on wearables at a platform level, which means the company’s goal is to make its technology accessible to a wide variety of devices.
The software development kit would allow developers to create smartwatches and fitness trackers using the Android operating system.
According to Google’s senior vice-president of Android, Chrome and apps: “We want to develop a set of common protocols by which they can work together.”
‘The next big thing’
“Google is taking wearables seriously and it wants everyone else to,” said IDC analyst John Delaney in a statement.
“The industry thinks wearables is the next big thing as sales of smartphones start to plateau in developed markets and this is the latest attempt to build momentum behind it,” he explained.
